This survey says it all. We as a profession need to reclassify what constitutes a full time weekly clinical work load. Long gone are the good ole days of reasonable pt volumes, getting a nap in on overnights, not being overwhelmed every day at work, etc. The intensity of the ER and the associated shift work requires that we declare a full time work week in EM at 20-24 hours max. Then we will stop seeing so much burnout.
