EP Monthly’s Features

There are several compelling “features” posted on EP Monthly’s site that are worth looking at.

Watch a movie about how an army medical team removed a LIVE rocket propelled grenade from a patient’s pelvis. Talk about some brass cojones.
See a trailer from Living in Emergency – a movie about physicians working through Doctors Without Borders
Pro/con arguments about administering tPA at 4.5 hours

Our docs like the scribes, but Dr. Big Work-Up likes to ask the scribes to ask all the questions on the standard template while he leaves the room and does whatever, like not saving those with tension pneumos and things of that nature.

That brings up a good point. What system is typically in place for a scribe (or anyone else in the ED) to address a problem within the doctor-scribe work relationship? Nurse K, in your situation, can the scribe bring up this issue with anyone in leadership?

    • Nurse K says:

The scribes hide in their corner and don’t talk to us EVER. I can’t tell you the name of any particular scribe. I’m not even sure who their boss is. If one of them came out of the shadows and said they were not happy asking questions of the patient on behalf of the physician, I’d tell them to politely explain their job description to the physician and, if that didn’t work, to talk to the medical director. Since I don’t mind expressing myself, I’d help that person out if I could. They’re pretty much there for med school references and to pad their admission resume (and are probably fearful of questioning a doctor as I was in college), so I’d stick up for ‘em.

ugh. please tell me the expanded 4.5 hour window won’t be widely adopted.
