The Loof Lirpa Bird

Friday night, my kids decided to watch the movie Insidious. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a pretty scary movie. Of course, that meant my middle daughter was up all Friday night with nightmares.

Today we were out of the house most of the day. We returned home tonight and then my middle daughter remembered that she had forgotten her homework. My wife and I were upset with her for waiting until the last minute, but we pulled out her homework sheet and began completing it.

Her homework entailed trying to find the mythical Loof Lirpa bird. To find it, you open a door and call its name “Loof Lirpa” three times. If that doesn’t work, you write its name on a piece of paper and wave it outside as you call. If that doesn’t work, then you hold the paper in front of the mirror and call the bird.

She tried it outside, but it was dark and she was scared. So she gave up. I then wrote “loof lirpa” on a piece of paper and waved it around outside. Nothing. Then I took the piece of paper in the bathroom and said “WHOA! There it is!”
My middle daughter immediately grabbed both of her ears, ran up the stairs screaming, and locked herself in her bedroom.
My son came in the bathroom … hesitantly … and looked around. Then he looked in the mirror and began laughing. Then my oldest daughter and youngest daughter did the same.

Middle daughter heard all the laughing and came down the stairs to see what was so funny.

Did you figure it out yet?

And yes, this really was her homework assignment.

Love it…My son is in Africa with his Grampa…every kid gets to go on a trip with him when they turn twelve…and he told us he rode a giraffe…I WAS a “loof lirpa”!!

thank you thank you thank you!

i used this with my five year old this morning. he’d been asking me to prank him, so this was a great opportunity. the one disappointment was that he drew my (unwilling to be humiliated) husband in on the action, so i could take no pictures of my sombrero and helmet wearing, singing family on the back deck.

Thanks for sharing and the laugh. Love the assignment and I am going to try it on Devan (10) tomorrow night. LOL!

I refuse to watch scary movies. No point because my head would be buried anyway.
