child molesters are usually very good at manipulation, coercion, and just plain ol threats…and their victims will do anything just to make them go away, even if it means not testifying.

Obviously, we don’t know the whole story here, but sex crimes are notoriously hard to win if the only witness is a child victim and the accused is smart enough to keep their mouth shut.

And an 18 year old from that kind of family is usually pretty poor and doesn’t have many choices on where to go. It’s hard to appreciate how poor people get by and the sacrifices they make until you really spend a lot of time with them.

Reading between the lines, what was that guy doing out of jail, let alone with a shotgun, within six years of raping his daughter and violently resisting arrest? What was that daughter doing even in the same county the night he shot himself?

I suppose the ED is a place to witness extremes of human behaviour.

Ah yes, the good ole days of being bullied on the surgery rotation. How did I ever do 36 on and 12 off for months at a time? At least experiencing months of massive sleep deprivation helped me to understand why surgeons are cranky all the time.

Thats medicine in a nutsell. It is one extreme to the other, particularly in the ER. In one room someone is dying, in the other room is somebody who called 911 for constipation.
