Another WhiteCoat classic. Sad but full of power and truth. This job...it does something to you after awhile. We have to keep reminding ourselves how important it is and that there are very few with the skills and the heart to do it well. We just have to keep trying and give our families an extra hug when we get home.

About 10 years ago I volunteered working victim support with the local police department. One night I got a page and we woke up parents to inform them their son hung himself while his kids were asleep in the next room.

Shortly after that I left my volunteer position. Kudos to those of you who continue to serve the public in such harrowing situations.

My father was a police officer and responded to a car accident with a boy on his bicycle. The boy was dead on the scene and my father had to get the parents (and subsequently tell them the awful news).
That stuck with him his entire life. I do not envy first responders, or 2nd responders either. My heart goes out to all involved.

This brought back awful memories for me. Very similar situation, but the patient was the teenaged son of a coworker. Calling his dad (my boss) in the middle of the night to deliver the news was the worst day of my life. I'm crying now just thinking about it. I need to put it back into The Hurt Locker.
